As a recognised leader in the provision of major programs in the fields of health and education, this move ensures the University is matching its best practice education with best practice policy.

From 1 January 2015, ACU joined many other Australian universities in becoming a smoke-free University. In 2023, the use of vapes on campuses was also prohibited.

ACU's Smoke-Free and Vape-Free Environment Policy outlines what a smoke-free and vape-free environment means:

  • Smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere within ACU buildings, grounds or controlled properties and University vehicles;
  • Extending the smoking and vaping restrictions on campuses by phasing out designated smoking areas in order to further reduce involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke and the vapour from personal vapourisers (with the exception of the Sydney campuses, who will have a temporary designated smoking area until further notice);
  • Offering support resources for staff and students who wish to quit or manage their smoking or vaping while on campus;
  • Prohibiting tobacco and vapouriser sales and promotion on campus, as well as zero funding or sponsorship from the tobacco industry.

The policy includes ACU land, buildings, vehicles, facilities and other property owned or leased by or under the control of the University. It affects anyone who studies, works or visits ACU premises, including the general public, volunteers and contractors, including people attending conferences, events and functions on ACU premises during the week and weekends.

Please refer to the Smoke-Free and Vape-Free Environment Policy for further information.
