The Ally Network at Australian Catholic University is a visible network of staff who support the university’s pastoral commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for students and staff who identify as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer, or as having any other sexuality or gender diverse identity (LGBTIQ+).

The Ally Network operates within the context of the mission and identity of ACU as a Catholic university, and as an expression of the university’s mission to act in truth and love, enhance human dignity and serve the common good.

About us

The Ally Network is not a political advocacy group within or for the university, but a practical expression of a vision for the human person in which all people – all genders, sexes and sexualities – are supported in their dignity.

Allies at ACU are not experts about matters of sexuality and gender identity. They are people from the ACU community who strongly support promoting equality and inclusion for staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ+, so everyone can safely work and study free of harassment or discrimination in an affirming environment.

ACU welcomes all people of goodwill in partnership as it works to bring about the Christian vision of the human person. The vision is foundational to the faith traditions and practices of the Catholic Church, in which the dignity of the human person leads to the flourishing of all peoples – regardless of creed, gender, gender identity or sexuality.

The ACU Ally Network aims to:

promote understanding and awareness of LGBTIQ+ issues that affect staff and students
promote and advance ACU’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful place of work, learning and support for staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ+.

Ally Network Co-Convenors

Chris Cheers (he/him)

Chris Cheers is a psychologist and educator based in Melbourne, Australia. Chris is an endorsed educational and developmental psychologist and board-approved supervisor. Chris has also developed an expertise and interest in sexuality and gender development, completing specialised training in supporting LGBTQI+ clients across all ages. Chris is a member of the Australian Professional Association for Transgender Health (AusPATH) and the Australian Association of Psychologists Incorporated (AAPi).

Chris completed his undergraduate and honours studies in psychology at the University of Sydney before completing his postgraduate studies in Melbourne. Chris has been a lecturer in psychology at ACU since 2011 and recently submitted a PhD with the Centre for Alcohol and Policy Research at La Trobe University. Chris published his first book, The New Rulebook, with Harper Collins in 2023.

Chris also enjoys making psychology ideas accessible through commentary and interviews in podcasts, print media and television. Chris has recently appeared on ABC Radio National, 7am Podcast, The Age, The Guardian, Reputation Rehab (ABC Australia), Triple J The Hook Up, ABC News, and Archer Magazine.

Ally Network Co-Convenor Danielle O'Donohue

Danielle O'Donohue (she/her)

Danielle O’Donohue is the Digital Content Writer/Editor in the Digital Experience team in Marketing and External Relations at ACU. She is a cisgender bisexual woman who came out later in life.

Danielle has worked at ACU for 10 years, beginning in an administration role in the School of Arts on the Strathfield Campus, before moving to North Sydney to work in student administration in the School of Education, and then to MER to join the project to overhaul the ACU public website in 2018. In her pre-ACU life, Danielle worked as an entertainment journalist and at a music publishing company.

While Danielle still enjoys trips to the theatre, movies and the occasional gig, she also spends time outside of work volunteering with LGBTQIA+ youth organisation Twenty10.

Ally Network Members

The ACU Ally Network comprises staff who have completed LGBTIQ+ Ally Training and have chosen to formally join as members of the Ally Network.

We offer LGBTIQ+ Ally Training a few times each year. As staff members complete training and become members of the Ally Network, their names will be added to the table below.

In addition to the ACU Ally Network, there are several LGBTIQ+ student clubs and societies on ACU campuses.

Ballarat

The ACU Ballarat LGBTIQ+ Club is a supportive network of LGBTIQ+ students/staff/alumni and allies, that promotes inclusivity on the Aquinas (Ballarat) Campus. We host regular social events to ensure that LGBTIQ+ individuals feel included and connected within the ACU community. We offer a safe space for people of all sexualities and gender identities to feel that they can be themselves, and we support LGBTIQ+ students to engage with university life.
